After a hard season, the S3 hockey team ended on a high with a good result in the S3 South Schools Hockey Tournament. Through teamwork and sheer determination, Selkirk managed to pull out all the stops and come out second in the tournament, beaten only by Earlston. After a rough season this result was a fantastic way to end the season.

To start off the day Selkirk took on Hawick. A gallant effort from everyone helped Selkirk to come out of it with a 0-0 draw. Some high level skills, which were used throughout the tournament, and great communication between team members helped mark a good start to the tournament for the high school’s S3s.

The team’s hard work was rewarded by a 3-0 win over Kelso, which lifted the team’s spirits and placed more confidence within everyone.

After finishing with a total of 4 points in the group stage, Selkirk progressed to the next stage; the semi-finals. Selkirk took on Gala to gain their spot in the final. Over time a slight rivalry has grown between the Gala and Selkirk teams and neither was willing to give up the chance to play in the final without a fight. From the moment the first whistle blew, the pitch became a battleground of two rivals, each giving it their all to achieve victory. However, the Selkirk side, still riding on the wave of success, came out on top with a 2-0 victory.

This meant they progressed to the final against a strong Earlston side. The only thing that stood between them and the cup was fifteen minutes of intense hockey. It was a well balanced match and each team has its own strengths but only one could win. Sadly, after a huge team effort Earlston won with one goal to nil, marking Selkirk the runners up.

Although they only finished second, it was still a fantastic achievement for the team and hopefully next year will see them gain the title.
